This is a version of a page in my Chinese 3-4 class' Wikispaces site. Prior to this project, my students worked in small groups to examine an ordinary object from their daily lives to discover what might make it unique to our culture. They wrote about these things and posted photographs. Currently, students in a suburb of Beijing are reading these and beginning to respond.
In the meantime, after this week's final exams, my students will continue a textbook chapter on sports, which concludes with a somewhat challenging reading about the very different roles of sports in the lives of US and Chinese teenagers, the former encouraged to participate in order to make college applications look good, the latter strongly discouraged because their entrance into college hinges on a yearly exam.
The US students by the end of next week will be recording podcasts of small group discussions to post on their group's wikispace page. These can be accessed by clinking on links like those below.

体育运动：美国和中国 Sports culture in China and the US
Sports are an important part of many individuals' lives; what role do they play in the larger society? What are the different perceptions about the role of sports in the lives of teenagers in China & the US? What role do university sports teams play in our two countries?
What about sports outside the lives of high schoolers? What sports are popular in our countries? Which professional athletes are popular? Why do some people look up to them? Are there status and high salaries justified? Why are the Olympics such a important event around the world?
By examining these differences and similarities, what can we learn about our cultures? A lot!
